New entering and returning full time students must have health insurance throughout their academic studies when registered full time. Full time students are required to complete the Web-based Coverage Selection Form to either elect or decline the insurance that Northwestern University offers through the Aetna Student Health Benefit Planning Insurance Agency. The deadline to complete the Coverage Selection Form is October 1, 2009 for registered students in the fall quarter of 2009.

Failure to complete the Web-based Health Insurance Coverage Selection Form will result in automatic enrollment in the NU Plan. Once your student account has been charged for the insurance, you will not be able to cancel the plan until the following academic year.

Please Note: The On line open enrollment for the Fall 2009 begins July 1, 2009 and ends October 1, 2009.

To complete the Web-based Coverage Selection Form:

  • Login to your CAESAR account using your Northwestern University Net ID.
  • From the Enterprise Menu on the left, select For Students ==> Health Coverage Plan, then complete and submit.
  • If you are unable to access the documents using this step try: For Applicants ==> Health Coverage Plan.
  • Once you have submitted your Web-based Coverage Selection Form, you should receive a confirmation for your record via email. After October 1, 2009, students registered for fall quarter will not be able to complete the web-based Coverage Selection Form. Only new entering students for the winter, spring and summer quarters can go online to complete a Coverage Selection Form when open enrollment is available for each quarter.
  • Note: Students, who are enrolled in the Physical Therapy/Prosthetics program or part time in the School of Continuing Studies, please refer to your corresponding section below

Physical Therapy/Prosthetics-Orthotics Students

Students that are in the Physical Therapy or Prosthetics-Orthotics programs cannot enroll via the Web-based form on CAESAR. Students must submit a hard copy of the Coverage Selection Form (PDF) to the Insurance Office. However, in some cases it may be that a part time application is required. Please contact the Insurance Office for more information.

Part-time Students

Part-time, half-time, School of Continuing Studies students and students from Garrett Evangelical Seminary and Seabury Western Seminary may enroll in the insurance on a voluntary basis. Part-time students may fill out the part-time application (PDF). After completing the application, these students must submit payment by check to the Insurance Office. Garrett and Seabury students must contact their school administrator.

Early Arrivals

Some students' academic year begins before September 1st. Coverage is available for these students at a cost of $6.47 per day. Applications for early arrivals are available at the Insurance Office or on the Web (PDF). In addition, students who arrive early must also complete the web-based Coverage Selection Form (PDF) by the indicated due date to enroll or waive the Aetna Student Health Plan effective September 1, 2009.

Optional Dental Plan

All NU students, even if they have waived the Aetna Student Health Plan, may apply for the Aetna Advantage Dental Plan by logging on to the Aetna Student Health website and completing the Web-based application.

Referrals

The Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan is referral-based. Students should make an appointment to obtain a referral from the Health Service before visiting specialists to avoid an additional $250 non-referral penalty. Note: dependents are not required to have a referral.

Clinic Use

Having a hospitalization insurance policy does not make a student eligible to use the clinic, you must be a registered student. Even if you are eligible to use the clinic and have hospitalization insurance, certain costs for services are charged to the patient (see document on Who Can Use the Health Service). The Health Service is unable to cover all the costs associated with providing comprehensive healthcare.
